A trio of 12 dozen drug kingpins from Mexico were extradited back to America on Thursday night by Law Enforcement officials.
They were flown in for their federal cases on Friday morning at Brooklyn Federal Court.
The main suspect, Rafael Caro Quintero, was wanted for torturing and murdering DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena in 1974. Camarena was undercover during a mission, having spent four years working against the dangerous cartel. He was out to lunch with his wife when he was kidnapped at the hands of the cartel.
Quintero was captured and admitted to the murder. He was released from prison in 2013 after serving 28 years of a 40 year sentence. A judge in Mexico said that he was wrongly tried and his case was tossed.
In 2018 the Federal Bureau of Investigation added him to their top ten fugitive list, where he was considered armed and dangerous by the organization. They put a $20 million dollar bounty on him for his capture.
A representative from the DEA’s office said we will never forget the sacrifices of officer Camarena. He went onto say, “I want to thank the officers of past and present for their dedication to this case. This is a reminder that our agents will come get you anywhere on the globe.”
The shocking crime and lifestyle was turned into a Netflix documentary named “Narcos.”
