The New York Giants are all-in on the veteran quarterback market and will continue checking all their boxes, hosting Russell Wilson for a visit on Friday, according to multiple reports.
Both the Giants and Wilson appear to be prisoners of Aaron Rodgers, who was officially released by the Jets on Wednesday and should make a decision on his new team in the coming days.
The Giants and Wilson’s former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, are two of the favorites to land the 41-year-old future Hall-of-Famer. The loser of this so-called sweepstakes is likely to pivot to Wilson.
New York general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, whose jobs are on the line this season, are desperate to find a legitimate quarterback to help stabilize a franchise that had one of its worst seasons ever, going 3-14 in 2024.
The Daniel Jones experiment failed miserably, as they decided to cut the six-year starter during the Week 11 bye — just the second season of his four-year, $160 million deal — after he went 2-8 as the team’s starter with just 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven picks.
Both Schoen and Daboll had been doing their due diligence before the 2024 season, too, almost sensing the writing on the wall regarding Jones. They even met with Wilson one year ago, making Friday’s visit a circle-back of sorts.
The 36-year-old 10-time Pro Bowler and one-time Super Bowl champion instead signed with the Steelers, where he started 11 games after overcoming an early calf injury, usurping now-Jets Justin Fields in the process.
He completed 63.7% of his passes for 2,482 yards and 16 touchdowns with just five interceptions.
Whether it is Wilson or Rodgers under center for the Giants in 2025, the plan is clear that Schoen wants a veteran quarterback to serve as a bridge for what the franchise hopes will be the next franchise passer. Big Blue has the No. 3 pick at the NFL Draft next month and could potentially come away with one of the top two passers available in Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders.
