The Yankees are not going to solely win ballgames on the home run, and Tuesday night in the Bronx served as a stark reminder of that.
Eugenio Suarez launched a grand slam off reliever Mark Leiter Jr. to punctuate a five-run eighth inning, which lifted the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 7-5 win over the Bronx Bombers at Yankee Stadium.
New York (3-1) hit another three home runs — all solo shots from Jasson Dominguez, Anthony Volpe, and Ben Rice — to give them an MLB record 18 through their first four games of the season. The offense could not muster much else, though.
The Yankees went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and took a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning when Diamondbacks first baseman Josh Naylor made an error that allowed two runs to score.
Arizona was limited early on by Yankees starter Will Warren, who was making his first start of the season. Working around four walks, he allowed one hit, which just so happened to be a two-run home run by Corbin Carroll.
Fernando Cruz followed with two scoreless before the wheels fell off. Tim Hill entered in the eighth and allowed a double to Randal Grichuk, who scored on a Geraldo Perdomo single to make it a 4-3 game. After getting Carroll out on a comebacker, Leiter came in and walked two-in-a-row to load the bases.
He struck out Naylor but was burned on a 2-2 splitter that Suarez pulled out of the yard for his fifth homer in as many games this season.
