Children of Promise NYC (CPNYC) received a donation of 100 laptop computers that were later distributed to students in need in both Brooklyn and the Bronx.
The laptops were given to teen scholars at CPNYC on April 29, who have shown a great need for personal computers, with the goal to help students bridge the digital divide that has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This donation is so pivotal after a grueling pandemic left our children in Brooklyn and the Bronx at a severe disadvantage, exposing a nationwide digital divide that furthered isolation, anxiety and delayed educational growth,” said CPNYC Founder and President Sharon Content. “We are so thankful for the donation of these laptops from Laptops For Kids that will go toward our organization’s fight against the learning loss experienced by our scholars here at Children of Promise, NYC.”
CPNYC also aims to provide robust support to children of incarcerated parents and their families through child-centered, trauma-informed programming. One of the ways CPNYC helps support these children is through supporting avenues of learning and exploring ways to make education more accessible.
When the peak of the pandemic hit, members of CPNYC and teen scholars lacked access to the technology needed to attend and succeed in remote learning. In order to ensure CPNYC scholars did not get left behind, CPNYC has provided access to technology, and also will be offering a summer academic enrichment program to help students recover from potential learning loss.
“We’re excited to do our part to support Children of Promise, NYC, and [get] laptops into the hands of today’s youth who might otherwise not have access to them,” said Ross Cohen, co-founder of Laptops For Kids. “My path to entrepreneurship and founding my first tech company began at age 16 when I received my first computer. We couldn’t be happier to partner with Children of Promise, NYC, to help put technology into the hands of this generation of learners and seize an amazing opportunity to make an investment into their future.”
