A local vocal ensemble is looking to give back to their fellow artists through their new fundraising initiative.
Fourth Wall NYC is a 12-person ensemble that centers itself around telling stories through music, movement and collaboration with other art forms, including film, dance and visual art. Founded by Johnathan McCullough and Christopher Allen, the group is working to record its debut album this fall.
“Since finding out that singer fees in the New York choral scene have not changed more than a few dollars since 1980, we set out to build our company on the idea of creating an infrastructure of care for the artists making it a priority to support equitable pay, child care, and healthcare,” said McCullough. “After speaking with colleagues, we found that these three pillars create the largest struggles in the sustainability of artists and lead to many artists leaving the industry out of a necessity for survival.”
In an effort to give back more to its artists, Fourth Wall NYC recently launched “All In For Artists.” Through this initiative, Fourth Wall NYC wants to be able to help its artists on and off the stage with their everyday needs. All proceeds raised through this initiative will be given directly to Fourth Wall NYC’s artists.
“We are setting out to change the industry by committing to supplying these necessities to artists with the eventual goal of putting our 12 singers on a salary,” said McCullough. “We are hoping that other performing arts institutions will follow our lead to promote the sustainability of the arts.”
