A new art exhibit that opened in Manhattan celebrates the limitlessness of the Black network through a variety of works.
Entitled MY PEOPLE, the exhibition showcases new artwork from five artists spanning a range of communities and mediums. The exhibition was curated by Phillip Collins, founder of Good Black Art.
“When I started Good Black Art, one of the first pillars of my business strategy was collaboration. I am only interested in partnering with the best parts of the art world to further our mission: supporting Black artists and collectors,” said Collins. “Working together with NYC Culture Club, Artsy, Fairchain, and The Last Resort Artist Retreat (TLRAR) Residency for this exhibition and sale, exemplifies how Good Black Art is a plug for collaboration within this industry.”
The artists featured in the exhibition are Jewel Ham, Mario Joyce, Adrian Armstrong, Tae Ham and Laurena Finéus. The artists use a variety of mediums and techniques to create visual dialogues to tell a story of care across geography and generation. Though the five artists are from different locations, they show consistency in their art through the daily gestures, routines and practices that define the power of art collective.
The exhibition and artists will also be featured in an upcoming docu-series that explores what it means to be an emerging Black artist at the beginning stages of their career.
The pieces in the exhibition are now available for bidding on Artsy. with digital certificates of title and authenticity backed by Fairchain, which ensures an artist royalty on future resales. Good Black Art will be donating 10% of the show sale proceeds to Derrick Adam’s The Last Resort Artist Retreat (TLRAR) Residency.
“From an art perspective, we want our business to sustain itself within the Black community. On a macro level, we want the entire Black community to have the ability to sustain itself independently from the external forces that have only worked against us throughout history. That will only happen if we invest in ourselves. Good Black Art has started that investment process in creating and nurturing a network of artists, collectors and all who engage with art.” states Collins.
MY PEOPLE will be on display through Nov. 5 at the NYC Culture Club, located at 185 Greenwich Street (World Trade Center, Oculus, C1 Level, South Concourse) and is open from 12 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.
