Coney Island Mermaid Parade: See photos of nautical-inspired costumes and more

Mermaids and mermen don’t mind the rain: Despite heavy showers, the annual Mermaid Parade swished a collective fin along Surf Avenue and the boardwalk in Coney Island, Brooklyn. Because you can’t keep a good merperson down.

It’s been a popular year for whimsical creatures, and the merpeople even allowed the unicorns to join the 35th annual parade. A tradition since 1983, the event was facing turbulent waters in May as organizers were unsure if they’d have enough funding to cover the permits, security and various other costs required to hold the spectacle that draws hundreds of thousands of the sea-curious. But donors were able to raise the $50,000 needed in time to keep the parade swimming.

And swim it did. Scroll down for a look at the costumed revelers.
