It’s official: Lin-Manuel Miranda’s final “Hamilton” curtain call will be July 9, it was announced Thursday. The Broadway star’s alternate, Javier Muñoz, will take over the lead role as Alexander Hamilton on July 11.
For fans anxious to see Miranda in his Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, which picked up 11 Tony Awards last Sunday, take heart — Miranda revealed on Twitter Thursday that a live recording of the show will be filmed before he exits the role.
“What are we doing with that footage? No idea. Throwing it in a vault at Gringotts for a bit probly [sic]. But we’re getting it,” Miranda, 36, tweeted Thursday, referring to the high-security bank in “Harry Potter.”
He added: “I’m so thrilled for [Javier Muñoz]. We created the role together. I’m still jealous he got to perform for Jay-Z & Beyoncé.”
Miranda is leaving the stage for a stint on the silver screen — he’s set to star alongside Emily Blunt in “Mary Poppins Returns,” due in movie theaters Dec. 25, 2018.
Muñoz, a Brooklyn native who grew up in East New York, currently plays Alexander Hamilton for one performance a week. He starred in the show when President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama saw the performance at the Richard Rodgers Theatre last July.
Prior to “Hamilton,” Muñoz was a cast member of Miranda’s musical “In the Heights.” Other stage credits include “Two Gentlemen of Verona” at Washington, D.C.’s Shakespeare Theatre, as well as “Into the Woods” and “Richard III” at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
