A new era for “The Daily Show” will begin on September 28, when Trevor Noah takes over the anchor chair from Jon Stewart, whose last show is August 6.
Noah, a 31-year-old South African comedian, announced the start date in a humorous video released online yesterday, in which he tries out lines at Stewart’s desk before the 16-year veteran interrupts him.
The new host joined the program as a contributor in 2014, and his replacement of Stewart completes a transition in Comedy Central’s late-night lineup, where Larry Willmoreas “The Nightly Show” replaced “The Colbert Report” earlier this year.
Noah faced some controversy shortly after the network announced his appointment in May, when some anti-Semitic and misogynistic tweets were publicized. Comedy Central defended him and Noah tweeted, “To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn’t land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian.”
