The rush of the holiday season is here and the pressure to give the perfect gift is real.
One SoHo store is taking the guess work out of holiday shopping and asking New Yorkers to purchase specific items for refugees across the world who are in desperate need.
The Choose Love pop-up shop on West Broadway has necessities like life jackets, hot food, children’s boots and hygiene packs, and offers the option to buy someone a hot shower, mental health support, accommodations, legal assistance and more.
The shop is facilitated by Help Refugees, a charity that helps supply 80 refugee-focused projects across 11 countries. The mission is to “turn consumerism on its head,” organization CEO Josie Naughton says. “Everything right now feels so political, but this is about human beings.”
Choose Love first appeared in London last year and raised $1 million and 800,000 meals, 3,556 nights of accommodation, 25,000 essential winter items and 100,000 necessities for babies and children, including 77,000 packs of diapers. That’s our kind of holiday shopping.
