Urban Matrix is a full-service architecture firm with a portfolio of work that encompasses all scales of design from the architecture of single buildings, to multi-building groups, urban design and campus planning. Every project we do has a history behind it. Whether the rehabilitation of a historic structure or the adaptive reuse of an older building, we look to integrate new designs and purposes to existing conditions while preserving and enhancing that sense of authenticity that is much beloved with historic buildings. Christopher Stienon, the founding principal of Urban Matrix, has a diverse background as both an architect and an urban designer working on a wide variety of project types for both public sector and private clients. His approach to design includes a careful analysis and research into the conditions surrounding a particular assignment in order to identify opportunities that lead to innovative design solutions. Recent work at Urban Matrix includes three successful applications to the Landmarks Preservation Commission for alterations that range from the complete redesign of a row house façade, to a full double-floor rear yard extension. Other notable projects completed by Christopher Stienon include a study to expand the historic Carnegie Mansion for the Cooper Hewitt Museum, a master plan for the reworking of the historic Union Terminal in downtown Denver, and a master plan for Governors Island that included an assessment of the historic structures and the potential to bring these older buildings to compliance with LEED standards. Christopher Stienon is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Urban Land Institute, the American Planning Association, the American Institute of Certified Planners, and the Institute for Urban Design. He is also a LEED accredited professional.
