Beanies, skullcaps, watch caps — whatever you call them, you can count on them to keep you warm. But stylish?
Well, count on that, too, as more and more designers are taking the winter hat upscale.
“They were blowing out in September, when it wasn’t even remotely cold,” says Randi Butwin, co-owner of Shag, a boutique in Roslyn brimming with stylish and unexpected finds. Among the hot sellers: Max & Moi cashmere beanies glittering with crystals, Hippy Spirit’s cable caps with leather patches and winter hats from London-based label Funky Bling, emblazoned with mirrored letters spelling out “Vibe,” “Rebel,” “NYC,” “XOXO” and more.
Jennifer Behr — known for chic hair accessories — offers knit beanies as posh as they are plush, scattered with pearls or Swarovski crystals.
And Purdie Baumann, a former Rockette who’s gone from high kicks to high fashion, now designs Birdcage Beanies, a line of knit hats adorned with sassy net veils. “They are a wink to the past with the edginess of now,” she notes on her website. “Downton Abbey meets Brooklyn Flea.”
