Wine and dine in New York City this month at a dedicated pop-up celebrating the delightful union of orange wine and fresh pasta.
Orange Glou — the world’s first and only wine store exclusively dedicated to orange wines — will host events on March 10, 17, and 21 at 6 pm at its 264 Broome St. location on the Lower East Side.
Orange wines, also known as skin contact wines, are made with white grapes but crafted in the style of red wines. Orange wine acquires its unique hue and texture from extended contact between the grape juice and skins after pressing — something Orange Glou founder Doreen Winkler knows well.
At the March pop-ups Winkler will infuse her passion for orange wine with her love of fresh pasta, collaborating with Chef Cameo Fucci of Allora Pasta Co. to showcase a four-course tasting experience.
Organizers promise that the pop-up will cater to every palate — from seasoned orange wine enthusiasts to those first sippers, and everyone in between.
“I met Chef Cameo through the Women in Hospitality group and was truly impressed by her and her cooking. Orange Wines are so versatile and pair with so many foods, so we figured what better way to showcase what we’re both passionate about than with this pop-up,” said Doreen Winkler, a natural wine sommelier, orange wine expert and founder of Orange Glou. “Every pop-up event will be different with a new menu and wine pairings each time to show a variety of different styles of orange wines. Each menu is going to be delicious, the wines very lively and fun and I’m so happy to introduce more people to orange wines!”
The inaugural pop-up on March 10 will feature a special appearance by Alsatian natural-wine icon Christian Binner. Guests can savor a vegetarian menu curated for the occasion, including a blood orange and black radish salad, culurgiones pasta from Sardinia stuffed with potatoes, pecorino, and chives, ricotta tortellini in brodo with brown butter and garden broth, and a delectable semolina olive oil cake with candied lemon.
Binner’s wines will complement the dishes, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Each night of the pop-up will showcase a different menu and wine pairing — each sip introduced by Winkler, who will provide insights into the nuances that make orange wines both distinct and food-friendly.
Tickets start at $55 and include the four-course menu and wine pairings. They can be purchased here.
