Fast-acting cops worked to stop a man from taking his own life by jumping off of a Manhattan building.
Police say that at 7:20 a.m. on Jan. 29, officers responded to a call of a suicidal man on the 55th floor of 425 Park Avenue. The man, who is in his 20s, had stated that he was going to jump from the building, which is currently under construction.
Emergency Service Unit officers responded and found the man on the ledge of the building and holding a metal pipe, which he used to keep the officers at a distance.
After engaging with the man in conversation, officers learned that the man had recently gone through family troubles. A spokesperson for the NYPD said that the man had also applied for a construction job at the building he planned to jump from, but when he was denied the job he decided to end his life.
Officers were able to take the man into custody at 7:57 a.m. without incident or injury. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation.
