Detectives in the Bronx charged on Thursday the man who allegedly delivered a deadly punch to a senior resident in front of his building last month.
Kiam Chelcher, 33, faces a single count of assault for allegedly attacking Hector Burgos, 69, in front of the apartment building where the suspect lives, at 3212 Cruger Ave. in Allerton, early on the morning of April 27.
Burgos, an Allerton resident who lived on Rosewood Street, suffered blunt force trauma to the back of his head as a result of the punch, and died of his injuries on May 2, law enforcement sources said.
Officers from the 47th Precinct, in responding to a 911 call about a man in need of assistance, found Burgos unconscious at the Cruger Avenue location at about 4:47 a.m. on April 27. EMS rushed him to Jacobi Hospital, where he died of his injuries on May 2. Afterward, police declared his death a homicide.
It’s unclear, at this point, what allegedly led Chelcher to assault Burgos in the first place, sources familiar with the case said.
Following an investigation by the 47th Precinct Detective Squad, Chelcher was formally booked Thursday on the assault charge. Additional charges may be pending the results of the ongoing investigation.
