A Bronx affordable property manager accused of allowing tenants to live in deplorable conditions is now facing heat from Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Five Star Management an entity of The Stagg Group, which operates multiple properties in the Northwest Bronx has come under scrutiny by the Governor after reports of subpar conditions at multiple of its properties had surfaced for months now. The reported problems include allegations of drug related crime, bedbugs, mold and flooding.
Several tenants at Five Star’s Bedford Park Manor, located at 2985 Webster Ave., spoke with the Bronx Times in May about a variety of issues in their building, including neighbors harassing neighbors, roach infestation near incinerators, water-damaged ceilings, squatters who were living in the basement of 2985 Webster Avenue, and the lack of building vestibule locks at 2985.
Tenants also said that the some buildings did not have live-in superintendents for a period of time.
After the New York Daily News reported about the conditions at Bedford Park Manor on Sunday, Cuomo said he had heard enough, and ordered an expanded investigation.
“No one deserves to be subjected to these conditions and I am ordering the relevant state agencies to expand their investigation to all properties managed by this company,” Cuomo said.
Previously, Cuomo had the state Health Department inspect some of Five Star’s properties and also ordered the state Office of Rent Administration to investigate whether rent-regulated units in the apartment complex are being adequately maintained earlier in October.
