Chaos quickly erupted, law enforcement sources said, as the officers attempted to take one particularly belligerent individual into custody.
As they tried to make the arrest, several group members attacked two of the officers, wildly punching and kicking them, law enforcement sources said.
The officers called for backup, and after the reinforcements arrived, three more suspects were arrested three suspects in connection to the incident.
One of the attacked officers suffered minor injuries to the face, police said; both cops were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, charges against the three suspects are pending. The investigation remains ongoing.
A litany of used fireworks was strewn across the street where the crowd had gathered.
