Detectives picked up a Brooklyn man on Sunday night who allegedly knifed several people, including one fatally, during a robbery attempt earlier that weekend.
William Smith, 45, of Marion Street faces murder, robbery and assault charges for his bloody rampage on Feb. 26 at what police described was an illegal gambling den at the corner of 57th Street and Seventh Avenue in Sunset Park.
Law enforcement sources said Smith allegedly visited the location just before 9:21 p.m. Friday night and went on the attack. Among his victims was Yong Zheng, 46, of the Bowery in Manhattan, who was stabbed multiple times and later died.
Two other men, ages 39 and 42, were also stabbed and hospitalized for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening.
Through an investigation, detectives determined that Smith was the primary culprit in the bloody robbery attempt. Following questioning, he was taken into custody on Feb. 28 at the 72nd Precinct’s stationhouse.
