Police say they have identified a person of interest after a twin was stabbed to death outside a Brooklyn bodega on Sunday.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny says he now believes 20-year-old Veo Kelly killed Samyia Spain outside of Natural Plus deli, located at 77 4th Avenue in Park Slope at around 1:30 a.m. after she and her twin sister refused his advances.
According to police, the twins were known to go to the storefront during late nights and early hours to get food, however, this time they found Kelly there. He had apparently just left a party nearby when he ran into the siblings and allegedly became enraged when they wouldn’t give him their contact info.
“When they didn’t take to his advances, it got verbal then it got physical,” Chief Kenny said. “A fight breaks out, and he ends up stabbing one girl in the neck causing her demise.”
Police say they recovered video from inside the bodega and of the interaction but did not catch the slaying itself. On March 20th police say they executed a search warrant at his Bedford-Stuyvesant home where they recovered the clothing he was wearing at the time of the murder.
Investigators do not believe he met the woman at the local party hall he had apparently just emerged from, but instead simply ran into them by chance while searching for something to eat after a night of drinking. Police also report that they are attempting to come to terms on a deal with Kelly’s lawyer for a surrender.
Meanwhile, police say the regional fugitive task force is hunting the alleged killer.
Spain’s family launched a GoFundMe to raise money for her burial. At the time of publication, the campaign has raised $6,136 raised of its $20,000 goal.
