Three workers were injured when several floors of scaffolding collapsed in Brooklyn Thursday afternoon, fire officials said.
The three workers were not seriously injured and all were taken to Woodhull Hospital by EMS. One firefighter said, “These guys are awfully lucky, that was a lot of debris from those scaffolding.”
The collapse occurred at about 3 p.m. at 566 Grand Street in Williamsburg, a six story building under construction. Workers were building onto the side of that structure from an adjacent roof when the scaffolding and supports suddenly gave way in the high winds.
Firefighters raced to the scene to find tons of wood and metal tangled on the three story adjoining roof and into the courtyard below in the rear. The three workers were found immediately and were not trapped, fire officials said.
The men were removed from the roof and taken to the hospital.
The workers were working for Global Construction. Supervisors on the scene declined comment except to say, “Thank God they will be okay.”
The Department of Buildings were called to inspect the site and a stop work order was slapped on the site pending investigation.
There are numerous buildings under construction in the Grand Street corridor, Mayor Bill de Blasio was here only this past week seeking to help small businesses.
