Charges are pending against the driver involved in a multi-vehicle crash in Brooklyn early on Sunday morning that left two police officers seriously injured.
According to police sources, the incident unfolded along Avenue U at Coney Island Avenue in Homecrest at around 2:11 a.m. on June 15.
Police reported the driver, a 24-year-old man behind the wheel of a 2024 Chevrolet Suburban SUV, violently struck a 2024 Volvo XC90 while heading northbound along Coney Island Avenue.
The impact of the collision sent the Suburban careening into a marked police cruiser, with two officers assigned to the 61st Precinct inside, heading southbound on Coney Island Avenue. A passenger inside the Suburban was also ejected from the vehicle.
Officers from the 61st Precinct and EMS units rushed to the scene.
Police reported that the two officers inside the damaged cruiser suffered serious injuries: one sustained a broken pelvis, a broken arm and head trauma, while the other suffered a broken hip. EMS rushed both officers to a local hospital in critical but stable condition.
Paramedics also came to the aid of the ejected Suburban passenger, who suffered full-body trauma, according to police reports. That victim, whose age and gender were not yet known, was hospitalized in stable condition. A second passenger suffered minor injuries.
The driver of the Volvo, a 34-year-old woman, and her husband, refused medical attention at the scene.
Finally, the Suburban driver, a 24-year-old man, was taken into custody at the scene. Sources familiar with the incident reported that they believe he was under the influence of alcohol at the time.
The NYPD Highway Patrol Collision Investigation Division is still examining the case.
