Trying to cross a Chinatown street proved fatal for a 90-year-old man fatally struck by a driver in an SUV on Saturday morning, police reported.
Law enforcement sources said the collision occurred at 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 25 at the corner of Canal and Elizabeth Streets.
According to information police obtained, the unidentified pedestrian was attempting to cross Canal Street from south to north when he was fatally hit.
A 61-year-old man was behind the wheel of the SUV, a 2013 Ford Escape, which was heading eastbound on Canal Street. The driver stopped after hitting the pedestrian and remained on the scene when police arrived.
Officers from the 5th Precinct and EMS units responded to the incident and found the pedestrian lying in the street with body trauma.
Paramedics rushed the injured pedestrian to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was pronounced dead. Police have withheld the victim’s identity, pending family notification.
No charges have been filed against the driver at this time, police reported.
The case is in the hands of the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad.
