A 38-year-old man is dead after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while riding an e-bike in Chelsea Sunday morning.
Carlos Garcia-Ramos, of Washington Heights, was found by cops just before 1:30 am on Sunday in the roadway on West 24th Street between 7th and 8th avenues; sustaining severe injuries, he was transported by EMS to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police say Garcia-Ramos was riding his e-bike eastbound on West 24th Street when he was struck from behind by the driver of an Infiniti sedan. The collision caused Garcia-Ramos to be ejected from his bike and hit a parked vehicle, before collapsing to the ground.
The Infiniti driver fled the scene, cops say, but the car was found parked just up the block at 24th Street and 7th Avenue. The driver was ultimately identified as Edgar Maeda-Luca, 24, a resident of the same block in Chelsea. Maeda-Luca was arrested and has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
The NYPD has recorded 63 hit-and-runs causing critical injuries across the city in the first three quarters of 2022. That’s down from the 69 recorded in the first three quarters last year. But the 30 such incidents seen in quarter 3 of 2022 is the most of any three-month period since at least 2015, according to NYPD statistics.
As of Oct. 31, the city had seen 206 fatal traffic collisions in 2022, including 14 cyclist deaths. 273 people were killed on city streets in 2021.
