Police are investigating a mysterious death along the FDR Drive Promenade in East Harlem on Sunday morning that resembled something out of a “Law & Order” episode.
Law enforcement sources said a bottle collector found a rotting corpse inside a trash can along the promenade between East 112th and 114th Streets at about 2:40 a.m. on June 6.
According to police sources, the collector rifled through nearby receptacles looking for recyclable cans and bottles when he accidentally knocked the trash can over.
As the can fell to the ground, cops said, a large amount of blood spilled out from inside. The collector then spotted the dead body and called 911.
Officers from the 23rd Precinct and EMS units responded to the incident. It’s not clear, at this point, how long the body had been in the trash can.
Police have withheld the victim’s identity, pending family notification. EMS transferred the corpse to the Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
No arrests have been made in the ongoing investigation, police said.
