The Turkish Consulate in Midtown was vandalized during the early hours Monday morning with about 10 windows smashed, according to police.
Authorities received a 911 call at around 3:15 a.m. alerting them that a man was smashing the windows of the consulate, located at 821 1st Avenue, near the United Nations. When police arrived, the suspect had fled the scene, according to the NYPD.
The NYPD did not say whether the vandalism was a bias attack or related to the ongoing Turkish elections.
Staff from the consulate were seen sweeping up the shattered glass from the sidewalk Monday morning.
A worker at the consulate told amNewYork Metro that the vandal swung a metal rod at the windows. The street remained cordoned-off until the late morning as staff knocked out the remaining shards and swept them off the sidewalk.
Police say there were no injuries as a result of the damage. No arrests have been made.
