The Moth, the NYC-based nonprofit that hosts storytelling events worldwide, will host its first-ever Harlem StorySLAM on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

StorySLAM is the Moth’s open mic storytelling competition, and this show’s theme will be “Only in Harlem.” It will be at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, 515 Malcolm X Boulevard at 135th Street, at 7 p.m.

The show will be hosted by Dame Wilburn, a writer and sometimes Moth podcast co-host. People will put their name in a hat, and ten people will be chosen at random to tell a five-minute story about life in Harlem. At the end of the show, one person will be honored as the first Harlem StorySLAM champion.

Suzanne Rust, Curatorial Producer at The Moth, said that the nonprofit’s pop-up last summer at Harlem Week was a great event that showed how many powerful stories there are from the neighborhood.

“We’re excited to head back to Harlem for this special SLAM, and can’t wait to hear more,” Rust said. “I hope people will join us on February 4th, whether they are up for telling a story, or they just want to enjoy the show. It’s sure to be a special evening.”

The Moth was founded in 1997, and since then has hosted over 40,000 stories, told by people live and without notes. Its podcast gets over 73 million downloads a year. More information on the show can be found at themoth.org.
