A 71-year-old man died Monday after colliding with another motorist in Queens.
Fitz H. Slowe, of East Flatbush, Brooklyn, was driving a Chevy sedan eastbound on South Conduit Avenue in Springfield Gardens, at the intersection with Guy R. Brewer Boulevard near JFK Airport a little after 8 p.m. on Dec. 18. Police say at the intersection, a 30-year-old driving a Dodge pickup truck southbound on Guy R. Brewer smashed into Slowe’s vehicle.
Both motorists were taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where Slowe was pronounced dead while the pickup driver was listed in stable condition.
Police have not made any arrests in the case, but the investigation remains ongoing.
The intersection of South Conduit and Guy R. Brewer has been the site of 43 crashes, injuring 91 people, over the past decade, according to NYC Crash Mapper.
As of Dec. 17, the city recorded 249 deaths in traffic collisions in 2023, one more than at the same time last year. While the other boroughs have seen either the same or declining numbers this year, deaths in Queens have risen sharply. The borough has seen 81 deaths in traffic collisions this year, a 25% increase over levels recorded last year.
