A driver in Queens faces assault charges for allegedly running down a police officer during a traffic stop on Wednesday night, police reported.
Law enforcement sources said two officers assigned to the 106th Precinct initially moved to stop Anthony Marte, 35, in the vicinity of Dumont Avenue and 85th Street in Ozone Park just before 8 p.m. on Feb. 14. It’s alleged the vehicle Marte operated had mismatched plates.
As the officers attempted to pull the sedan over, police sources said, it sped away — resulting in a brief pursuit for several minutes until it careened into a tree. But the pandemonium didn’t end there.
When the officers approached the banged-up sedan, authorities noted, Marte allegedly put the vehicle in reverse, striking one of the cops. The injured cop’s partner managed to yank Marte from the vehicle and place him in cuffs.
EMS rushed the injured officer to a local hospital for treatment of a broken left leg. Marte was also whisked to Jamaica Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Marte has been charged with assault on a police officer, vehicular assault, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration, police said.
