UPDATE: Queens man charged with manslaughter in connection with death of 71-year-old man in Corona

Police arrested a Queens man and charged him with manslaughter in connection with the death of a 71-year-old man in Corona.

Alex Garces, 22, of East Elmhurst, was first- and second-degree manslaughter and second-degree assault. Bail was set at $50,000 bond over $25,000 cash over $25,000 cash partially secured and Garces was ordered by the judge to return to court on Jan. 17.

District Attorney Katz said, “This was a horrible incident captured on a Ring doorbell video. The victim was pushed with so much force it propelled the 71-year-old man over the stairs and onto the pavement, where he struck his head.”

According to charges, at 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 12, the victim, 71-year-old Edgar Moncayo, was seen on surveillance footage speaking on his cellphone on the stoop of Garces’ home on 102nd Street. Garces, who was inside the home, allegedly stepped outside and shoved Moncayo, who fell backward down the steps and slammed his head on the sidewalk.

Charges say that Moncayo suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result. EMS transported Moncayo to NYC Health & Hospitals/Elmhurst in critical condition. Moncayo died of his injuries on Jan. 13, according to authorities.

If convicted, Garces faces up to 25 years in prison.
