The suspect behind two subway stabbings in Queens over the weekend is now behind bars on attempted murder charges, police announced Sunday.
Donny Ubiera, 32, of 202nd Street in Bayside was apprehended in Flushing, within the confines of the 109th Precinct, at 8:54 p.m. on June 11. He was subsequently booked on two counts each of attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
Sources familiar with the case said detectives canvassing the area near Utopia Parkway in Flushing spotted Ubiera in the vicinity, and recognized him from a picture the NYPD circulated previously.
Ubiera is accused of attacking older men on two consecutive days along the 7 line in Queens, stabbing each victim in unprovoked attacks. One of the victims was left in critical condition.
Law enforcement sources said the first attack occurred at 8:40 a.m. on the morning of June 10 on board a Manhattan-bound 7 train approaching the Queensboro Plaza station in Long Island City.
According to police, Ubiera allegedly approached a 62-year-old man while displaying a large knife. Without provocation, cops said, the suspect allegedly slashed the man across his face and right hand.
Law enforcement sources said Ubiera then departed the train at Queensboro Plaza station, and was seen running toward Queens Plaza North.
Officers from the 108th Precinct and Transit District 20 responded to the incident. EMS brought the victim to Elmhurst Hospital, where he received numerous stitches to close his wounds.
Police said the following morning, at 7:15 a.m. on June 11, Ubiera allegedly struck again, this time attacking a 55-year-old man waiting on the Flushing-bound platform of the 74th Street-Broadway station in Jackson Heights.
According to authorities, Ubiera attacked the man without provocation, stabbing him in the neck. The suspect then fled out of the station to the street, and headed in an unknown direction.
Officers from the 115th Precinct and Transit District 20 responded to the attack. EMS brought the man to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition.
Police were able to recover the knife used in the attack at the scene.
