2016 New York news: Medicinal marijuana, minimum wage hike and more

  • Qualifying New Yorkers will be able to pick up medicinal marijuana when the city's first dispensary opens next month in Union Square. Only a certain group of pre-approved patients will be able to buy the cannabis, such as those suffering from AIDS, cancer, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis. The 14th Street location is one of four medical marijuana dispensaries opening in the city.

  • Next year, the full vision of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, nearly 10 years in the making, is due to come to fruition. The $4 billion transit hub is expected to be fully operational in 2016 with the opening of the Oculus entrance, underground passageways to Liberty and Vesey streets and all of the PATH platforms and a mezzanine level. The hub's WestField World Trade Center Mall -- the largest shopping center in Manhattan at 365,000 square feet -- is also slated to debut in the spring, with some of the high-end retailers including Links of London, Banana Republic, Under Armour and Victoria's Secret.
