A rapidly shrinking Fiterman Hall stood at less than half of its original 15-story height last week, left. (The right photo was taken a year ago.) As of the middle of this week, the building was down to just five stories, with about one floor coming down each week, said Marc Violette, spokesperson for the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York. At that rate, the City University of New York classroom building damaged on 9/11 could finally be gone by the end of November. Once the black-netted building is down, a new Fiterman Hall will rise in its place, just north of the World Trade Center site. That work should start in December, Violette said, and the new Pei Cobb Freed-designed building, with classrooms, offices and student lounges for the Borough of Manhattan Community College, is scheduled to open in 2012.
