After coming off a rough week, when his campaign manager Corey Lewandowski was arrested and his comments about punishing women if they get an abortion put him under fire , Trump stayed out of controversial headlines this week.
The real estate mogul held a rally Wednesday night in Bethpage, Long Island , where he was welcomed by up to 10,000 people. He made sure to point out his ties to New York, including that he used to golf at Bethpage State Park.
Trump reiterated his desires to build a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border, “knock the hell out of ISIS” and “start winning again” in America. He also criticized Clinton, the press and his Republican opponent Ted Cruz.
“I think you can forget about him,” Trump said of Cruz.
There were also around 200 protesters at the rally. Two people were arrested, police said.
The polls look good for Trump going into the New York primary. Although he lost the Wisconsin primary on April 5, he is leading in New York with support from over 50 percent of likely Republican voters, according to a Monmouth University Poll released Wednesday . ” data-id=”111668684″ data-link=”https://amnewyork.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/26088_image.jpg” class=”wp-image-1.11668684″/> Photo Credit: Newsday / Thomas A. Ted Cruz started the week with a win in Wisconsin on April 5.
But his campaigning in New York was less successful. When he met with black and Latino pastors at a restaurant in the Bronx on Wednesday , he was met by a small gathering of supporters and a handful of protesters. One protester said “Ted Cruz has no business being in the Bronx” because of his position on immigration.
On Thursday, Cruz met with Orthodox Jewish supporters in Brooklyn , ensuring them that if he is president, he would be a strong ally to Israel.
“I give you my word, after these seven long years of an administration that turned a blind eye and a cold shoulder to Israel, in January 2017, that will end,” Cruz said.
He also criticized Trump for having “a profound lack of understanding” of foreign politics.

Meanwhile, GOP candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz campaigned in New York, but one was not met with as much enthusiasm as the other.
