A driver in the Bronx was killed after crashing his SUV into a guardrail along the Cross Bronx Expressway over the weekend.
On June 29 at approximately 3:05 a.m., a 31-year-old man was behind the wheel of a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander, traveling southbound on the usually busy highway at “an apparent high rate of speed” when he struck a metal barrier near Lawton Avenue, police said.
The impact into the guardrail caused the SUV to go airborne and overturn into a grassy area, thus destroying the vehicle, law enforcement sources said.
Officers from the 45th Precinct, in responding to a 911 call about the incident, arrived and discovered the man with severe head trauma. EMS responded and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police are withholding the driver’s identity pending family notification. There are no arrests, but the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.
According to the NYPD, there were nearly 8,000 motor vehicle collisions citywide in May, with five motorists and two passengers killed. Also in May, nine pedestrians and two cyclists were killed.
