A 20-year-old man plowed his car into a Brooklyn building late Monday night, causing part of it to collapse, police said.
The man, who police said was drunk, lost control of his car and rammed it into a building on the corner of East 5th Street and Avenue P in Midwood about 11:30 p.m. Police said he then tried to run away from the car, but was captured shortly after.
He was taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn and charges are pending.
While no one was injured in the crash, its impact did dislodge several vertical supports, which caused a large part of the corner building to collapse, according to the Department of Buildings. The building held a store on the first floor, which was closed, and two apartments on the second floor, but no one was home at the time, police said.
The department issued an order to vacate the building and ordered a construction fence installed around it. A partial vacate order also was issued for the commercial space as well as the parking lot behind it.
According to a spokesman, the agency is investigating if the building will need to be demolished.
