A 90-year-old Brooklyn man died this week on what would have been his 65th wedding anniversary, just days after his 85-year-old wife was killed when an SUV crashed into the couple, authorities said on Thursday.
Frank Tornabene died of his injuries from the crash early Tuesday, police said. His wife, Joan Tornabene, died immediately after the driver of an SUV slammed into them at a car wash in Gerritsen Beach on May 1.
The couple were set to celebrate their momentous wedding anniversary, according to the Marine Park Funeral Home, which will host a joint visitation on Friday. A funeral is scheduled for Saturday.
A black Jeep Liberty, which was leaving the car wash, first rear-ended the couple’s silver Honda Accord at about 3 p.m.
The couple then got out of their car to assess the damage, but a 61-year-old car wash worker got into the Jeep, backed it up and then accelerated, striking both of them as they stood behind their car, police said. He then backed up, hit the building and accelerated again, hitting the couple another time, video surveillance shows.
The worker stayed at the scene and there were no arrests, police said. What caused him to accelerate multiple times was under investigation.
