A Brooklyn mother has been charged in the suspicious death of her 6-year-old girl after the child was found dead in a bathtub on Friday, authorities said.
According to police sources, officers from the 75th Precinct were called to a home in the vicinity of Elton Street near Ridgewood Avenue in Cypress Hills at around 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 after receiving a 911 call.
Sources familiar with the case said the child’s father found the youngster unresponsive in the tub after checking in on her.
First responders rushed the child to Brookdale University Medical Center, but it was too late; she was pronounced dead.
NYPD sources familiar with the investigation report that the girl had been inside the tub about 20 minutes before police arrived and was found with blood clots in the eyes — an indication that some kind of physical struggle occurred.
Police say the mother, 26-year-old Karla Espinal, was taken to the station house for questioning. Late Saturday night, she was officially charged with felony assault, child endangerment and reckless endangerment.
Additional charges against Espinal are pending the results of the autopsy, which the Medical Examiner’s office is conducting to determine exactly how the child died.
