Uber hits deli in Chelsea, injuring seven, officials say

An Uber car slammed into a corner deli after colliding with a yellow taxi in Chelsea Thursday evening, injuring seven people, authorities said.

The yellow cab was driving north on Eighth Avenue when the livery car driving west on 21st Street slammed into it around 7:10 p.m., causing a chain reaction, officials said. The Uber vehicle then crashed into West 21 Deli and Grocery hood-first, breaking glass and damaging the storefront.

The building at 215 Eighth Avenue remains structurally sound, police said.

Chelsea resident Craig Danuloff, who owns an apartment in the building and was there at the time of the crash, heard the sounds of at least three crashes Friday evening, he said. The witness, 45, saw firefighters helping a woman pinned between the car and the deli storefront when he came downstairs, he said.

Five pedestrians with serious injuries were taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue in stable condition, according to the FDNY. Both drivers suffered minor injuries, the NYPD said.

The deli’s owner and staff were not among those injured, New York City council speaker Corey Johnson said on Twitter. Johnson, who represents the neighborhood, thanked first responders for their quick appearance on the scene and promised to help the business re-open.

The drivers involved in the crash have not been charged as of Friday morning, police said.
