Rev. Kevin V. Madigan, pastor of the parish, and the worshippers have commissioned artwork for the memorial, including statues and stained glass representing events in the lives of St. Florian, patron saint of firefighters, St. Michael, patron saint of police officers, and St. Joseph, patron saint of workers.

“This sanctuary will allow visitors to reflect upon the extraordinary good that can come out of evil even in the most horrendous of situations,” said Rev. Madigan.

After the World Trade Center attack, FEMA moved into the chapel which became the federal emergency agency’s command center and Father Madigan ministered to firefighters, police and rescue and recovery workers as well as parishioners.

The chapel is part of the parish of St. Peter’s Church on Barclay St., the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the state.

St. Joseph parishioners and friends are conducting a $1.7 million campaign for the reconstruction. Cardinal Edward Egan and former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani are sponsors of the project.
