The Lower Eastside Girls Club earlier this month received a $150,000 New York State Capital Funding Grant, presented by State Senator Martin Connor. The funds will be used in the construction of the Girls Club’s new Center for Community on Avenue D between Seventh and Eighth Sts.
The sustainably built, state-of-the-art, green Center for Community will house all Girls Club programming and the organization’s three social-venture businesses, a commercial and small-business incubator space and a mixed-income housing development to be developed by a commercial partner, The Dermot Company.
The Lower Eastside Girls Club currently serves 500 youth ages 8 to 23 from low-income families. This number will increase threefold, to 1,500 girls and their families, when the new facility opens in early 2010.
“The Lower Eastside Girls Club has served young women and girls in the community for more than a decade,” said Connor. “It is a place where hundreds of girls can dream big and develop their unlimited potential. I’m delighted to present the girls club with $150,000 in New York State Senate capital funding to help them build the Center for Community, which will allow them to serve thousands of more girls in our neighborhood.”
