Police said a bicyclist was killed while riding along a busy Bronx street at night last week.

The incident occurred on Monday, July 22, at approximately 9:55 p.m. in the vicinity of Westchester Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway in Morris Park.

According to law enforcement sources, 26-year-old Amadou Barry, of Castle Hill Avenue, was riding his bike, heading westbound on Westchester Avenue in the right parking lane, when he “failed to navigate the roadway” and was thrown to the pavement, sustaining severe head trauma.

EMS and officers from the 43rd Precinct responded to the scene. EMS rushed the cyclist to NYC Health and Hospitals/Jacobi in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead.

Police said the bike was not a motorized vehicle.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.

According to the latest police statistics, traffic fatalities in the 43rd Precinct are down nearly 67% year to date compared with the same time period in 2023.

Citywide in 2023, the number of reported collisions of a single bicycle that do not involve other vehicles is 146, according to a NYC data report. Of that number, 129 cyclists were injured and seven were killed.
