Police are investigating after a dog was found in agonizing pain in a Lower Manhattan public housing trash compactor on Friday.
Law enforcement sources said the canine was discovered on Aug. 23 just before 11 a.m. at the Governor Alfred E. Smith Houses on South Street, a NYCHA housing complex located near the Brooklyn Bridge.
A maintenance worker who was cleaning the machine heard the dog crying in pain, police said.
Officers from the 5th Precinct arrived at the scene and rushed the female pup to the ASPCA for treatment, but it was too late, a spokesperson for the organization confirmed.
“Sadly, due to severe medical injuries resulting in extreme pain and a poor quality of life, this dog, an alleged victim of cruelty, was humanely euthanized to end ongoing and further suffering,” the spokesperson said.
So far, no arrests have been made and police do not yet have information on any suspect (s) involved in the cruel incident, but the investigation remains ongoing.
