OBITUARIES | Dominick Danzo, known as the Mayor of Thompson St., died at Easton Memorial Hospital in Easton, Maryland, on Oct. 11. He was being held by his daughter and son-in-law and passed into the arms of his beloved spouse, Carmella.-He was 97.
He was born in New York City to Angelina and Rocco Danzo. His career began at the War Department in Binghamton, N.Y., at the medical supply depot, and continued in Sommerville, N.J., as a warehouse supervisor for the Veterans Administration, beginning in the 1940s.
Known as “Dom,” he later transferred to the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier, and then was employed five years for J.P. Morgan Chase until his final retirement. Before working for U.S.P.S., he was enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps, working on several of the nation’s national parks, until 1934. Prior to his federal employment, Danzo also worked as a jewelry stone setter from 1938 to 1941.-
He was raised in Greenwich Village where he was known as the Mayor of Thompson St. and later lived for more than 60 years. He was known for always helping friends and business owners in the neighborhood. He was very handy and could do electrical work and repair TVs and radios, in addition to his talent as a jewelry maker.
Dom and Carmella were married in 1939 and lived in Binghamton for several years, before returning to Greenwich Village for six-plus decades, before he moved to Maryland to be near his daughter.
He was predeceased by his wife five months ago, as well as a son who died in 1945 at age 5. He also outlived his three brothers.
He is survived by his daughter Nancy and son-in-law Stephen Cossu of Tilghman Island, Maryland; six married grandsons, and eight great-grandchildren; a son, Daniel, and his wife of Gerrardstown, West Virginia; and two sisters, Lucy Pellone and Vita Derosa.
A viewing was held at Perazzo Funeral Home, 199 Bleecker St., followed by a Mass and burial in New York City.-
