The FDNY took on a fire that broke out at the Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park on Friday morning.
According to FDNY, a call came in about the fire at 9:23 a.m. on Dec. 27. Upon their arrival, FDNY personnel were met by a fire in the kiosk, located in the park at 40th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues.
The kiosk held four different stores at the winter village. The fire was brought under control at around 10 a.m. and there were no reported injuries as a result.
“There was slight damage to the adjacent kiosk and there was some heat impingement on the roof of the ice skating rink behind the kiosk on fire,” said Joe Castellano, Battalion Chief of FDNY’s Battalion 9. “No real fire spread, just some flame impingement, and you see a little browning of the white roof structure.”
At this time, it is unclear what caused the fire and the FDNY Fire Marshal is investigating.
About two weeks ago, on Dec. 16, a fire broke out at the Herald Holiday Market at around 4 a.m. that day. The fire, which was brought under control at around 5 a.m., took out several vendor stands in one part of the market. The fire was determined to be caused by an electrical issue and deemed not suspicious.
When asked by press how big a fire concern holiday markets are for the city, Castellano said, “I don’t think they were a concern at all, I think we just had two fires.”
“We are grateful for the FDNY’s quick response to the incident that occurred earlier today. The Rink and The Lodge are currently open. Most of The Holiday Shops have reopened, and we expect all the Holiday Shops that were not affected by the fire to reopen later today,” said a Bryant Park spokesperson in a statement to amNewYork Metro.
