Marilyn Dershowitz 68, the sister-in-law of famed Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, was killed around noon on Saturday when a U.S. Postal Service truck hit her on W. 29th St. near Ninth Ave. while she was bicycle riding with her husband.
Police said that Dershowitz, wearing a helmet, was riding her mountain bike west on the one-way westbound street covered by an overpass that connects two Morgan Annex mail-handling facilities.
The driver of the Postal Service truck, identified as Ian Clement, 62, apparently did not see the victim and drove on. Police found him later but he was not charged. Police viewed videotapes from surveillance cameras focused on the roadway beneath the overpass.
The victim, who recently retired as a special master in the civil division of State Supreme Court, was apparently caught between the mail truck and a car both going westbound when the truck hit her. She was taken to Bellevue Hospital where she died about an hour later.
The victim’s husband, Nathan, a criminal defense lawyer, was riding ahead of her and was waiting for her a block away before he noticed that she had been struck.
The couple, Tudor City residents, had been married for 47 years and have a son and a daughter and three grandchildren.
Meanwhile, Ray Deter, 54, owner of dba bars in the East Village, Williamsburg and New Orleans, died Sunday after having been struck on June 27 by a car and critically injured while he was biking at West Broadway and Canal St.
