An 18-year-old man was charged with manslaughter and assault on Thursday, a day after he punched a 65-year-old man so hard he fell onto the tracks of a Brooklyn subway station, police said.
Edward Cordero, of Brooklyn, was talking to himself when he approached Jacinto Suarez, of Staten Island, at about 2:30 p.m. on the southbound R train platform at Jay Street-MetroTech station in Downtown Brooklyn, according to Assistant Chief Vincent Coogan, of the NYPD Transit Bureau.
Suarez asked Cordero to back off, Coogan said. Cordero started to walk away but then he “came back and punched him out,” causing Suarez to fall onto the tracks, Coogan added.
Suarez was pulled back onto the platform, but was unconscious, according to police. He was taken to Brooklyn Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead.
Cordero was taken into custody, and was charged Thursday afternoon after undergoing a psychological evaluation, police said.
