A Kips Bay man apparently committed suicide by taking a dive from a luxury apartment building just before midnight on Monday, police said.
Responding officers found the man dead after he plunged from an 11-story balcony at 520 2nd Ave., landing in the yard of Kips Bay Court. The man’s companion could be seen slumped beside the body as officers attempted to console her.
“I heard the bang, the lady came out screaming. It sounded like the concrete was dented,” an eyewitness said.
The distraught woman clutched her face in despair and shock as members of the NYPD gently guided her away from the body. The man’s remains were concealed with a sheet while first responders flooded the scene.
Onlookers froze in disbelief, watching the incident unfold as numerous emergency vehicles surrounded the corner of 28th Street and 2nd Avenue.
Ruben has lived in Kips Bay Court for over a decade and told amNewYork Metro that the incident has left him in shock.
“This has happened before. A man jumped and landed in the kids’ playground,” Ruben said, watching the officers. “My heart goes out to her, I can’t imagine.”
