A 19-year-old East New York man was awaiting arraignment Wednesday on multiple charges, after being arrested Tuesday in the shooting of a 14-year-old girl on her way home from school on Nov. 22.
Rashawn Williams is being charged by the Brooklyn District Attorney with attempted murder, attempted assault, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment, in the Nov. 22 shooting of a Benjamin Banneker Academy student at Sutter and Euclid avenues.
Williams was arrested after a relative mentioned to an employee of a city agency that she believed Williams to have been the triggerman, said authorities. The agency contacted the NYPD, which then reached out to the relative and showed her a video from the scene. She confirmed it was Williams, according to a police source.
The student “was not the intended target,” said a police spokesman. The shooting is being investigated as possibly gang-related, he added.
