A man was brutally stabbed Wednesday morning just steps away from City Hall and police headquarters, authorities said.
The victim, a 19-year-old man, was violently attacked while standing outside of 1 Centre St. in Lower Manhattan at about 11:35 a.m. on Oct. 16.
Police sources said an unidentified male suspect approached the victim from behind and stabbed him in the upper back, just below the neck.
Initial reports from law enforcement sources indicated that the assault was unprovoked and that the two men did not exchange words before the bloody incident.
The suspect — whom police described as standing about 6 feet tall and wearing a dark leather jacket — fled on foot following the assault.
Officers from the 5th Precinct responded to the incident. The victim was reportedly bleeding profusely and had to be carried away on his belly atop a gurney as first responders attempted to stop the bleeding.
EMS rushed him to Bellevue Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition; he is expected to survive, law enforcement sources said.
Police combed the crime scene midday Wednesday for evidence. A puddle of blood was found on the red bricks covering the plaza as detectives poured over the area.
No weapon has yet been recovered; police believe the suspect used a knife in the attack.
The investigation remains ongoing; no arrests have been made, police said.
