Two months ahead of mandatory composting in NYC, residents of Manhattan, Bronx and Staten Island can get a free brown bin from the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY), the agency announced earlier this month.
The secured bins are designed to hold composting material including food scraps and yard waste. Residents of Manhattan, Bronx and Staten Island can order the bins online at no charge through Oct. 28 in anticipation of the citywide mandatory composting program, going into effect the week of Oct. 6 this year.
Brooklyn and Queens residents were allowed to order free bins before service began in their boroughs, DSNY said, but can now purchase additional or replacement bins if needed.
“Curbside composting fights rats and helps the planet. It’s a win-win – especially when it’s easier than ever – and residents of the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island can order free compost bins now,” said Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “Mayor Adams promised to bring this program to all five boroughs, and this October, that promise will be fulfilled.”
What is considered composting?
Many items are considered compostable, including leaves, yard waste, food-soiled paper and food scraps such as apple cores and eggshells. Homeowners must put these items into their composting bins to be set out for pickup on their designated recycled day.
The city puts these compostable materials to eco-friendly use after curb collection. The collected substances are turned into either renewable energy to heat homes or into compost sold to landscapers and given away free to New Yorkers for use in their yards or gardens, DSNY officials said.
Homeowners who do not separate their compost waste will be subject to fines. After a grace period, the city will begin writing summonses beginning in spring of 2025.
Other upcoming trash requirements
Meanwhile, NYC Mayor Eric Adams announced last month that owners of residential buildings with one to nine units will be required to put their trash out in containers starting Nov. 12, 2024. The bins have to be 55 gallons or less with secure lids.
Also, owners of small residential buildings and single-family homes must purchase the new official NYC Bine and begin using them by June 2026.
Prices for NYC Bin are available online at nyc.gov/sanitation. New Yorkers can purchase the bins on the website or by calling 855-NYC-BINS.
The requirements are part of the mayor’s plan to eliminate large piles of black bags that have lined city sidewalks for years.
